STUDENT NURSE EMERGED OUT OF SEATTLE'S LATE-1970S POSTPUNK, PRE-GRUNGE LIVE MUSIC SCENE. Formed by drummer John Rogers and Helena Rogers on guitar and vocals, the band was originally joined by bassist Joe Harris and guitarist Al Davis. The band's debut 7" EP featured three jagged, disjointed, and delightfully danceable songs: Disco Dog, Lies, and Snow. By 1980, Davis and Harris had moved on. Eric Muhs and Tom Boettcher then joined John and Helena, respectively, on bass and guitar. The four became the classic 1980s lineup, which lasted until 1984. Mid-decade, the Student Nurse dissolved, but not because of conflict or boredom. Members remained friends in spite of moving on to other cities and other fields of their lives, which included music, art, science, and performance.
The band reemerged in 2022 to play a one-off gig to celebrate the release of their career retrospective album called "Think For Yourself, Seattle Tour 1978-1984." All four members of the 1980s line-up played, and it was clear from the second or third song that the band was back. Student Nurse was not only blak-it was back to further it's original mission to create and spread vital, innovative music, but now fully part of the 21st century. Both John Rogers and Tom Boettcher had to bow out of the newly reformed band and were replaced by guitarist David Erich and drummer James Lord.
Over the next four years, the band emerged as one of Seattle's premier live bands and recorded the album "Problem Attic," which Goldmine Magazine listed among its top 10 albums of 2023. The bands' follow-up album "Safety Last' teamed them up with Seattle uber-producer Jack Endino. The album gained more regional and national attention, and In late 2025, after David Erich departed the band, Student Nurse welcomed 2026, opening for Mudhoney at two highly anticipated shows, solidifying Student Nurse's audience of old fans, veterans of Seattle's 1980s and 1990s music scene, and an abundance of younger fans in search of something totally new to them. Student Nurse is preparing summer 2026 shows to coincide with the release of their upcoming album, now being recorded with another notable producer, Steve Fisk. We hope to spend some time with you this summer, whether it's onstage or shuffling through crowded arts and music events.
