Wilum Hopfrog Pugmire ( 1951 – 2019) wrote weird fiction, horror, and fantasy with a prolific output of books, anthologies, news and journal articles, and fanzines. Pugmire was a beloved member of Seattle’s underground music and art scene whose work eventually found worldwide attention. He was influenced primarily by the work of H.P. Lovecraft and was known as a successor to Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Many of Pugmire’s Mythos stories take place in Sesqua Valley, a fictional location in the Pacific Northwest. In 2011, H. P. Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi said of Pugmire, “the prose-poet of the horror/fantasy field; he may be the best prose-poet we have,” and “perhaps the leading Lovecraftian author writing today.” Fellow Lovecraftian writer Bobby Derie wrote that Pugmire “wrote Lovecraftian fiction without the formulaic trappings of the mythos, wrapped in a sensuous prose and characters with easy, fluid sexuality.”
On March 26, 2019, Pugmire died at home from heart problems, a condition that he had been battling for many years.
